The Miranda Class USS Bonhomme Richard (NCC 31876) was assigned to the F'asa Sector in 2371 as part of the initial exploratory deployment in the Delta Quadrant. On stardate 50492.2, contact with the starship was lost and the vessel was officially listed as 'Missing, Presumed Destroyed'. However the ship had survived an encounter with Mrrshan pirates and, with a heavily damaged communications array, had been unable to contact Starfleet. The ship later became part of the Delta Fleet along with the USS Hunter and Dauntless however in 2373, the ship discovered a jointly operated Ssoran-Romulan base and contact was once again lost.
Nothing further was known of the Bonhomme's fate until 2375 when the USS Shadow encountered the Bonhomme's Chief of Operations in a Ssoran equivalent of a runabout. He stated that he had escaped from a Ssoran penal colony, however further searches found now other survivors, or indeed the prison itself. In 2376 the ship was found derelict by the USS Pioneer. The ship was returned to active service but was later destoryed in defence of ODS Delta II.
The USS Bonhomme Richard is named for the American warship commanded by John Paul Jones, which defeated HMS Serapis in 1779 but as a result of the battle, eventually sank. Another navy vessel by the same name was an aircraft carrier during the Second World War. At the turn of the 21st century, the name was given to a multi-purpose amphibious assault ship was engaged in the 'War against Terrorism' of that time.
