The Interpid Class, USS Bellerophon (NCC 74705) was commissioned in 2378. The class signalled a break with Starfleet's then usual ship-building policy of larger, more powerful ships. In order to correct the trend of falling numbers of smaller ships, as the older classes were decommissioned, the more compact Intrepid Class was created.
Bellerophon was named for the hero of Greek Mythology, who through his skill as an archer, and his courage, slew the Chimaera. His arrogance and pride led to his downfall however, when he attempted to ride the Pegasus to the gods of Mount Olympus. Zeus sent the gadfly to sting pegasus and throw Bellerophon. He survived the fall but was crippled and died alone.
The USS Bellerophon is currently commanded by Captain James Vincent and was previously commanded by Captain M'Rixx of Cait.
