Tortuga

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Caught between the gravity of a heavy star and a large gas giant, Tortuga Prime has no sunrise or sunset, no tides and no seasons. For the most part, the hot, arid atmosphere makes the planet’s rocky terrain unhibitable. The only tolerable region is the twilight zone. Nestled between the sun’s intense heat on one side, and the cold shadow of the gas giant on the other, the Federation base on Tortuga is the Fleet’s last refuge from the Falcarian confederacy.

The planet was discovered on the edge of Borg space not far from Narnia’s 6th Kingdom by the USS Hunter. With no other options after the Falcarian War, that crippled the Federation’s forces and saw the destruction of ODSDelta and the capture of New Terra, the survivors settled the planet, using and expanding a small mining operation to survive. Tortuga’s asteroid belt provides excellent cover for the remaining vessels of the fleet.

Tortuga has no atmosphere, and while suffering from intense gravitational forces from the sun and gas giant, which threaten to one day tear the planet in two, the Tortuga’s own gravity is normal and stable.

Tortuga prime is the scene of the Federation’s last stand in the Delta Quadrant. Life on Tortuga is hard and many of the civilians and diplomatic staff that survived the defeat at ODSDelta thirst to return to the Alpha Quadrant or New Terra.

Tortuga – The Dark Side

New Terra

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

The planet of New Terra was the first to be colonised by the Federation after the discovery of the Delta Wormhole. The planet is M-Class with an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere and has a slight axial tilt, so seasons are available. While New Terra has polar ice caps, oceans and some limited areas of desert terrain, the majority is temperate and covered with rich, verdant, vegetation. A significant portion of the forestation is located in the belts of equatorial rainforest.

In the past, New Terra has been colonised by the Ssorans, Bauffrin, Menelvagorean and Kessrith, and the appearance of the wormhole has also brought many species from the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The only indigeneous species are the Jera’ishai and Jera’kira: Peaceful and spiritual people who inhabit the jungle regions of the planet. The largest city on the planet, Tkrtrew, was established by Ssoran colonists while the Federation, on strengethening their position in the quadrant with the construction of Deep Space Delta, settled and created Outpost Cape Town – the planet’s first space port.

Over the years a peaceful dialogue was established between the planet’s two major powers: The Federation and the Ssoran Empire. A trade council was formed, with each having Ambassadors in each other’s territory. However, when the Entity destroyed Deep Space Delta, the Ssorans betrayed the Federation and the rest of the Trade Council, and invaded Federation territory, seizing Outpost Cape Town and imprisoning many Starfleet officers and Federation citizens. The USS Hunter, however, exposed Romulan involvement and turned the tide, allowing the Federation to once again gain the upper hand in the quadrant.

More recently, the Falcarian War has taken it’s toll on the planet and the Federation colony there. The Ssorans, allied with the Falcarian Confederacy, have once again occupied Outpost Cape Town. However, while many Starfleet officers have been taken as Prisoners of War, the majority of Federation citizens and colonists have been allowed to continue to work and live in Outpost Cape Town. Conspiracy against the Ssoran Empire or the Falcarian Confederacy is brutally rewarded however, with annulment of trading rights, imprisonment, torture and murder being commonplace.
